Essential tools for a good and neat kitsuke

Wearing a kimono is more than just draping fabric around the body—it is an art form that requires precision, layering, and the right accessories to achieve an elegant and polished look.

These are my personal preferences for the essential items that help ensure a beautiful kimono ensemble:

Hadajuban (肌襦袢) & Susuyoke (裾除け) - Undergarment Layer

A lightweight undergarment set worn beneath the nagajuban. The hadajuban absorbs sweat and helps keep the inner and outer layers clean, while the susuyoke is a wrap-around skirt that prevents the kimono from clinging to the legs and offers additional protection.

Wasou Bra (和装ブラ) - Chest Flattening Undergarment

A specially designed bra for wearing kimono, which flattens the chest to create a smoother silhouette. A sports bra can also be used as long as the back neckline is low to avoid interfering with the kimono collar.

Padding (補正パッド)

It is important to have a straight cylindrical body for kimono. Padding helps create a smooth silhouette, especially for individuals with pronounced curves. Thin towels can also be used as an alternative to padding for a more customized fit.

Nagajuban (長襦袢) - The Undergarment

A kimono should not be worn directly against the skin. The nagajuban is an undergarment that protects the kimono from sweat and body oils, ensuring the outer garment remains clean and lasts longer. It also provides structure and helps maintain the shape of the kimono.

Korin Belt / Waist Belt (コーリンベルト / ウエストベルト)

I personally prefer using a Korin Belt or Waist Belt instead of koshihimo. These provide additional security and convenience while securing the kimono in place before applying the more decorative elements.

Datejime (伊達締め) - Decorative Sash

A flat, wide belt worn over the koshihimo to smooth out any wrinkles and help keep the kimono securely in place. It ensures a neat foundation for tying the obi.

Tabi (足袋) - Split-Toe Socks

Traditional white socks with a separation between the big toe and the other toes, allowing them to be worn with traditional footwear. They contribute to the refined appearance of a kimono outfit.

Eri-Shin (衿芯) - Collar Stiffener

A flexible insert placed inside the nagajuban collar to maintain its shape and structure. It prevents the collar from looking limp and adds elegance to the neckline.

Obi Helper (帯補助具) - Obi Support Tool

A support tool used to aid in tying and securing the obi, ensuring a neat and stable shape. It helps maintain the proper positioning of the obi throughout the day.

Kimono Clips (着物クリップ)

Used while dressing to temporarily hold layers in place.
