Kimono Size

Kimono measurements are taken differently from Western clothing sizes. The key dimensions include:

• 身丈 (Mitake): Kimono length from the shoulder to the hem.
• 裄丈 (Yukitake): Sleeve length from the center of the back to the wrist.
• 袖丈 (Sodetake): Length of the sleeve itself.
• 前幅 (Maehaba): Front panel width.
• 後幅 (Ushirohaba): Back panel width.
• 袖幅 (Sodehaba): Sleeve width.
• 褄下 (Tsumashita): Length from the bottom of the collar to the hem in the front.

How to Take Kimono Measurements

If you are measuring yourself or a kimono, follow these steps to get accurate dimensions:

身丈 (Mitake - Kimono Length)

Measure from the highest point of your shoulder (where the collar sits) straight down to your desired kimono length. Traditionally, this is about the same as your height, but it can vary based on styling preferences.

裄丈 (Yukitake - Sleeve Length)

Measure from the center of your back (at the base of the neck) to the wrist, passing over the shoulder. This ensures proper sleeve drape.

袖丈 (Sodetake - Sleeve Height)

Measure from the top of the sleeve seam straight down to the sleeve hem.

前幅 (Maehaba - Front Width)

Measure the width of the front panel from the edge of the opening to the side seam.

後幅 (Ushirohaba - Back Width)

Measure the width of the back panel from one side seam to the other.

袖幅 (Sodehaba - Sleeve Width)

Measure the width of the sleeve from one edge to the other.

褄下 (Tsumashita - Tsumashita Length)

Measure from the bottom of the collar in the front down to the hem. This measurement affects how the kimono drapes in the front.

When measuring a kimono, lay it flat on a surface and use a flexible measuring tape to ensure accuracy. If you’re taking body measurements, it helps to have someone assist you for precise results.
